DESIGN YOUR OWN SHIELD
Every aspect of the ballistic shield has been created based on specific customer requirements
THE END USER IN FOCUS
Integris Composites offers a tailored solution for law enforcement and military units seeking ballistic protection customised to their specific operational requirements. Our “Design Your Own Shield” programme allows clients to define critical aspects of their ballistic shields, ensuring functionality that aligns with the realities of their work.
Clients work directly with Integris to define the shape of the shield, which may be adapted to suit different operational environments or tactical applications. Handle design is another key aspect, where ergonomics, grip style, and positioning are considered to improve comfort and control during use. Weight is also taken into account, ensuring the shield offers suitable protection while remaining manageable for the intended use.
Once the main design elements are identified, Integris offers guidance on protection levels, material options, and finishing. Clients can select from NIJ III+ or IV protection, choose between ceramic or high-performance polyethylene (HPPE) construction, and opt for either a flat or curved shield surface, depending on their preference and operational context.
First presented at Milipol 2023 and EnforceTac 2024, the “Design Your Own Shield” initiative has received strong interest from tactical users. Feedback has focused particularly on the importance of handle configuration, leading Integris to develop a range of prototypes using materials such as aluminium, steel, and aramid-reinforced ABS. To support development and testing, 3D-printed samples are also available for ergonomic trials, although these models are not field-ready.
Protection Standards
Understanding the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) protection levels is essential:
– Level II: Stops common handgun rounds (e.g., 9mm, .45 ACP); typically utilises soft armour.
– Level IIIA: Protects against most handguns up to .44 Magnum, submachine gun rounds, and shotgun slugs; employs soft or hard armour.
– Level III: Hard armour designed to stop rifle rounds (e.g., 7.62mm FMJ).
– Level IV: Defends against armour-piercing rifle threats.
All customised shields feature Integris’ signature Rosist finish, ensuring maximum durability in demanding conditions.
