Licking County Ohio SWAT test the Integris STAR shield

The Licking County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team recently invited Integris Composites to participate in a full-day training event, providing an opportunity to evaluate the Integris STAR Shield under realistic tactical conditions. The team conducted multiple scenarios including live-fire movement, injured-officer rescue, vehicle intercepts, and MRAP-based tactics, allowing the shield to be tested in the same environments officers encounter during high-risk operations.

Throughout the training, operators integrated the STAR Shield into their existing procedures without disruption. The shield was used in vehicle approaches, corner movement, and casualty extraction, providing mobile protection without restricting communication or speed of entry.

Danny Loper, Senior Ballistic Range Technician at Integris and former Licking County SWAT Operator noted:

“This shield is ideal for SWAT/Patrol use because of its light weight, customizable handle options, and gun ports. It is a significant improvement over the older shields we used on the team. The operators’ feedback during this training session was very positive and reinforced those advantages.”

The STAR Shield is part of Integris Composites’ specialist ballistic-shield line, originating from the company’s Design Your Own Shield initiative. The design was first developed in collaboration with a Swiss special-operations unit, where end users defined the size, protection level, handle geometry, and finish requirements. After multiple prototype iterations and field evaluations, the model was brought into production, reinforcing Integris’ commitment to tailored solutions that meet real tactical needs.

“Whenever we can provide a solution that increases the survivability of police personnel, we learn and improve,” said Adam Read, Marketing Manager for Integris and a former tactical law enforcement officer. “Licking County gave us that opportunity, and their feedback is already shaping the next round of refinements to our STAR Shield line.”

Ohio SWAT teams typically train under standards set by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and often expand their capabilities through organizations such as the Ohio Tactical Officers Association. These programs emphasize decision-making in high-risk incidents, vehicle-based tactics, and scenario-driven firearms instruction—exactly the type of environment in which the STAR Shield was evaluated.

For Integris, the training served as a practical assessment of how ballistic shields are used in motion, under stress, and in confined spaces. The insights gathered will guide continued development of the STAR Shield and future tactical equipment offerings.

Integris Composites would like to thank the Licking County Sheriff’s Office for the opportunity to participate in their training and for their candid feedback.
