A strategic role in next-generation armoured systems

Integris has played an active and technical role in the European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems 2 (FAMOUS2) programme. The programme is a major European Union defence initiative aimed at designing, developing, and prototyping highly mobile armoured vehicle technologies for future ground combat operations. FAMOUS2 is funded under the European Defence Fund with a total value of approximately €95 million over four years and involves a consortium of 18 companies from 10 European countries.

European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems

The programme is coordinated by Patria of Finland and represents a significant step forward in collaborative European defence development, focusing on mobility, protection, modularity, and interoperability.

Integris’ contribution

Integris’ materials engineering and simulation team has been responsible for delivering critical elements of the ballistic protection work package.

Ballistic protection solutions were designed using Impetus simulation software, enabling rapid iteration and optimisation of composite armour systems. These digital designs were verified through live-fire testing at Integris’ shooting range in Primarette France and validated at independent external testing facilities.

The first prototype shipsets have been delivered to Arquus for their light armoured vehicle platform and to Patria for two variants of the all terrain vehicle, including a standard configuration and a lightweight composite structure variant.

The work was led by project leads Matthew Beaumont and Jean Beugels, with ballistic testing carried out by Claus Thorsen, Jakob Bøgholm, and Julien Paysan-Mayet. Design engineering was led by Oliver Haagaard, while simulation activities were led by Piotr Tomaszewski.

The FAMOUS2 programme: context and objectives

FAMOUS2 builds on the earlier FAMOUS1 feasibility study and moves the programme from concept definition into prototype development. The project focuses on delivering future armoured vehicle solutions across multiple platforms, including all terrain vehicles, light armoured vehicles, and main battle tank concepts.

Key programme objectives include enhanced tactical and operational mobility, modular vehicle architectures, advanced protection technologies, and increased interoperability between European armed forces.

Industrial and strategic impact

FAMOUS2 plays an important role in strengthening European defence industrial cooperation. By bringing together major system integrators, specialised technology providers, and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, the programme supports the development of a more coherent and competitive European defence industrial base.

For Integris, participation in FAMOUS2 reinforces its position as a leading provider of advanced composite armour solutions and demonstrates its capability to deliver simulation-driven, validated protection systems for next-generation military vehicles.

Leadership perspective

Commenting on the milestone, Dr Matthew Beaumont, Head of R&D EMEA at Integris Composites, said:

“The FAMOUS2 programme has been an excellent example of how simulation-led design, materials engineering, and rigorous testing can be brought together across Europe to deliver credible next-generation protection solutions. Our team has demonstrated that advanced composite armour systems can be developed efficiently while meeting demanding mobility and survivability requirements for future military vehicles.”

Looking ahead

As the third year of the programme concludes, FAMOUS2 continues with field testing and refinement of prototype vehicles and integrated systems.

The successful delivery of FAMOUS2 will contribute to the development of future European ground combat capabilities and establish new benchmarks for collaborative defence innovation.
